Flutterby House

Branding Project for Costa Rican Hostel

2015

Every fall, whales pass by the small peninsula known for the local coastline shaped like a whale tail during their migration and spend some time in the warm waters to mate. Like the whales, people who are drawn to the coastline for the warm waters with nice surf, but also the rich colors, thriving wildlife and laidback culture.

I wanted to create something that paid homage to the local lore, but wasn’t trying too hard to be a local – something simple with bright colors. Something versatile, but legible, easily translated across language and medium.

The finished product are two mirrored whale tales, to create the butterfly shape that Flutterby house is known for.
