A systemic approach to nearly everything, the well is an ever-evolving philosophy for problem seeking, framework crafting, and solution guiding.
The Well Method
Used primarily as a visual illustration for design thinking & creative problem-solving processes to emphasize work and research that is often not visible or considered, but that needs to be done to build a self-sustaining system. This analogy has become a framework for how I view complex problems, and shapes how I plan, narrate, and guide projects and large ideas in both my personal and professional life.
Key elements of a well-built well are:
Identification of reason for digging: the core idea or issue
Qualitative and quantitative research to better understand and broaden access to said idea
Striking gold – often a “Eureka!” moment
Strategy development & dynamic goal setting for long-lasting success
Education systems to allow for growth and change within the environment
Protection and guidelines for best practices
This still developing methodology and analogy for navigating systems design through the lens of the creative process is one originally developed to encourage the use of design thinking methodologies with branding and production clients, it has grown into something much bigger.
Used as a guideline and a checklist, The Well provides language and reference for the creative process to emphasize the importance of research, groundwork, and planning necessary for the success of sustainable systems.
Not every system is the same, and not every system needs to be developed so extensively (or from scratch), but having an understanding that each of these pieces are in place before a product launch, or public announcement, or heavy investment into a business plan increase the reality of long-term success.
